The Santuario della Madonna delle Lacrime (Shrine of Our Lady of Tears) is located in Bellano on Lake Como, exactly in the village of Lezzeno.
According to tradition on August 6th, 1688 a local farmer on his way home was passing in front of a chapel where a round plaster image of the Virgin was placed. After saying his prayer, the Hail Mary, he surprisingly noticed that Our Lady was crying tears of blood. Immediately he ran to warn his relatives and the priest who then warned the bishop in Milan. Two years later on August 6th, 1690 the first stone of the Sanctuary was laid. In it there’s a niche above the altar where is placed the round plaster with the image of Mary.
The Sanctuary of Lezzeno rises above a panoramic hill overlooking the lake.
It has an elegant Baroque facade, simple and clean with a few decorations. Next to the church, on the right side, there is the bell tower.
Inside there’s a single nave richly decorated with marble (including the black marble of Varenna), stuccos and paintings. Behind the altar there’s a rich collection of votive offerings.
The sanctuary is surrounded by a large square accessible using two staircases. The northern one is enriched by seven tabernacles with modern mosaics representing the Sorrows of Our Lady.
From the sanctuary going up to the left along a wide cobbled mule track, it’s possible to reach in just a few minutes the Cappella del Miracolo (Chapel of Miracle). It was built in 1888 to celebrate the second centenary of the event. Inside it is the original shrine with a replica of the round plaster now placed above the main altar of the sanctuary.
A large indoor hall welcomes the visiting pilgrims, with tables for lunch and toilet, and at the back of the church there is a nice playground for the children.
The sanctuary is always open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The village of Margno located in Alta Valsassina has ancient origins.
In the old town are still preserved several stone portals dating back to the Upper and Lower Middle Ages, when Margno turned itself into a defensive fortress against possible attacks coming from Valle del Pioverna.
The houses of the historic village, in fact, were placed along a slope while the parish church of S. Bartolomeo was built aside from them and placed on the upper side of the whole nucleous. This organization of the the village was meant to be arranged in defense of the church. In the maze of the winding streets and alleys, the assailants remained easily trapped, the buildings being so close to each other and joined together by a system of overpasses, allowed the inhabitants to move quickly and safely from one house to the other in case of attack. There used to be also a medieval defensive tower located in Vicolo Stretto. The tower was cut down while serving at the time of some war. In addiction to its military function it also had the civil use to notify the inhabitants in case of danger.
The old town can be visited by following two different tours: that of the Antichi Portali (Ancient Portals) and that of the Siti dei Vecchi Mestieri (Sites of the Old Crafts). They are both explained in a large map placed in the municipal square and in other maps placed elsewhere within the village. All the maps are marked and indicated by numbered signposts.
In the town hall and at the tourist office is available a paper leaflet, otherwise it can be downloaded here: Historic Village Tour.

Santa Margherita church dates back to the eleventh century. Standing alone on a rock named Sasso della Guardia, it is located in the hamlet of Somadino in Casargo.
The location is strategically significant and testfies its military origin, in defence of Valsassina and Valvarrone.
The building has a single nave, of a small size, and is preceded by a porch. The most significant roman witnesses are the semicircular apes and the frescoes of the early decades of the twelfth century, the only roman painting remaining in the whole valley.
In the frescoes, wich recall Byzantine art, are a Pantocrator Christ, a Virgin and some saints, while on the northern wall there is a fresco depicting the Virgin with ST. Rocco and Margherita.
The church is devolved to the cult of St. Margherita who some claim to be the girl rescued by St. Giorgio in the fight with the dragon. A legend instead wants her to be the sister of the Saints Heremits from Lario, whom various churches and oratories in the valley are dedicated to. Once, being able to see each other, they held an important share in the defence. Among these are the churches of Camaggiore and San Grato in Vendrogno, St. Ulderico in Casargo and St. Calimero in Pasturo.

The house museum in Moggio Parish was commissioned in 1991 by Maria Goretti taking on the will of her husband Alfonso Invernizzi. The property was donated to the parish with the commitment to use it for the benefit of the whole community in Moggio.
