Description

The Civic Ornithological Museum “Luigi Scanagatta” is located in Varenna, a characteristic tourist village on Lake Como.

The Museum shows an interesting ornithological collection of the Larian territory. It was founded in 1962, thanks to the work of the naturalist Luigi Scanagatta, well known researcher in ornithology, malacology and botany, who collected specimens of birds of the area. Considered the relevance of the collection, in the ‘80s, thanks to a contribution of the Lombardy Region the Ornithological Museum became Civic Museum.

Once dead the naturalist, Father Tarcisio Scanagatta donated the important scientific library, the epistolary and the malacology collection belonged to his brother Luigi.

The library consists of more than 1,500 volumes, monographs and brochures, divided into ornithology, zoology, malacology and botany and includes many works of high scientific level.

The museum promotes the comprehension and the diffusion of the knowledge about the natural environment of Varenna and Lake Como.
