Piani d’Erna is a beautiful mountain destination overlooking the city of Lecco. Just like watching from a balcony, it is possible to admire one of the most beautiful views of Lake Como and its mountains.

It is dominated by Mount Resegone, with its characteristic jagged shape, and it can be reached from Lecco thanks to an easy-to-access cable car (info www.pianidibobbio.com).

Just a few minutes are necessary to get to the Piani d’Erna, a place for relaxation and fun, with various hiking proposals for all seasons.

In summer, children and families can enjoy the courses built on the trees in the adventure park and the slides in the tubing area, which in winter turn into snow-tubing slopes for bobsleigh and toboggan.

The hiking trails are many: from the paths to walk up as an alternative to cable car, to those ones leading to the summit of Mount Resegone, Passo del Fo, Mount Magnodeno and the “via ferrata” (equipped climbing route) at Pizzo d’Erna. In the area there are several huts to be used as shelters or base, one is Rifugio Stoppani.

The Nature Trail is also interesting. It offers an intinerary discovering the flora, fauna and landscape of the Piani d’Erna, with signposts placed along the path.

Northern Grigna is well known in the mountaineering world, thanks to the routes that once were the gym for great climbers, such as Cassin and Bonatti.

Its elegant silhouette overlooks Lake Como and its peak offers a unique view over the Alps, Brianza and Milan.

It offers several opportunities for hiking, mountaineering and ski touring, some of which are also suitable for average hikers and even families.

The main routes heading to Grigna start from Mandello del Lario, from Valsassina (with paths going from Pasturo to Pialeral and Rifugio Antonietta) or from Cortenova up to Valle dei Mulini and from Alpe Cainallo in Esino Lario to Porta di Prada and Bietti mountain hut or Alpe Moncodeno and Rifugio Bogani.

The mountain huts, located at intermediate height, allow to stop for a break before reaching the top. Among the most famous routes for the summit and Brioschi mountain hut are Cresta di Piancaformia ( Piancaformia Ridge ), Caminetto and Guzzi. Also popular are Traversata Bassa ( Low Crossing ) and Traversata Alta ( High Crossing ) connecting Grigna and Grignetta.

To live the experience of hiking in Grigna it’s not necessary to get to the summit. There are many paths winding at the foot of the mountain standing over beautiful meadows, valleys and woods, with walks accessible to everybody.

The Sentiero del Viandante (Wanderer’s Trail) is an old mule track dating back to Roman times. It runs along the eastern shore of Lake Como and going through small clusters of houses, old mills, castles, churches and chapels it maintains at an average height, among woods and terraces cultivated with vineyards and olive trees.

The ancient trail, once connecting the numerous villages on the eastern shore of the lake from Abbadia Lariana to Colico, is popular in all seasons among hiking lovers.

It can be walked in stages, following the orange signposts, in a beautiful landscape alternating views of the lake and the mountains and offering surprises at the remains of ancient human presence: a small village, a little church, a washhouse or an ancient hamlet.

Between one stage and the next, it’s possible to go down to this or that village, for a cultural and gastronomic experience.

Even mountain bike passionates can enjoy these paths, offering various opportunities of ascents and descents suitable to freeriders as well.

In the months of September and October, various Pro Loco on east Lario organize a program of trekking discovering the Sentiero del Viandante (Wanderer’s Trail) with the possibility to go back by train to the starting point.
